Social Circus is an innovative way of engaging with people to improve overall mental health and wellbeing, connectedness, and self-worth through the use of ‘social’ circus arts, as well as psycho educational and therapeutic group experiences.

In late 2020, the project was introduced in Lithgow High and Portland Central Schools with the aim of training staff to offer social circus as an alternate sport choice to engage young people and explore the power of social circus skills.

Social Circus was also demonstrated at the Walk N Talk for Life Lithgow Community event December, Multicultural Fun Day and Bowenfels Community Hub Homework Centre.

Participants in the program have reported improved confidence and well-being, as well as increased self-worth.

Project organiser, Leanne Walding, shared with us a story of a young boy who was hesitant to try out the activities. By the end of the session, he was so good at juggling that he was starting to teach other participants.

The program has had over 350 participants to date.
