Eliza is a Yuin/Nuenonne woman and Aboriginal Consultant engaged by Wentworth Healthcare. She has worked extensively with communities and service providers in the design and delivery of Aboriginal community, health and mental health services in urban, rural and remote settings.

Mitchell is a Wiradjuri man who was born and raised on Darug land. Mitchell has worked in Aboriginal health for 11 years and is currently completing a Bachelor of Community Services.
Overview
Improving the cultural competency of health care services can increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ access to health care, increase the effectiveness of care that is received, and contribute to closing the gap in health outcomes.
This RACGP accredited training is a comprehensive series designed to increase cultural awareness and develop practical skills to enable health professionals to deliver culturally appropriate healthcare to their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. This training is also an approved Cultural Awareness Training required for the Indigenous Heath Incentive PIP*.
This training was specifically developed for our region, with interactive sessions allowing participants to learn, ask questions and explore culture, and improve their understanding of the importance of cultural safety in accessing healthcare.
Learning outcomes:
- Consider Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander experiences of health and illness
- Discuss the historical impact on contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Confidently support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the primary care setting
- Identify steps your practice can take to provide culturally safe and acceptable healthcare to patients
- Recognise the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives on health and wellbeing.
Important note about the format:
This Zoom session is 1 of 3 mandatory components of this training**. Participants must commit to completing all 3 components to receive a statement of completion/accreditation.
- Component 1 - Self-paced eLearning module (1 hour)
- Component 2 - Zoom workshop (this session) on Tuesday, 1 March 2022, 6.00pm – 9.00pm (eLearning module MUST be completed prior)
- Component 3 - Self-paced eLearning module (2-3 hours) – this must be completed within 6 weeks of attending the Zoom.
Eligibility
- This course is for general practitioners and their staff.
- Participants must work within the LGAs of either Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow or Penrith.
- A maximum of two participants from the same organisation per program will be accepted. Any additional EOIs from the same organisation that are assessed as eligible will be placed on a wait list for future training.

*To meet the requirements of the Indigenous Health Incentive (PIP), at least two staff members must complete approved cultural awareness training, one of which MUST be a GP. Where a staff member, including a GP, counted towards meeting this requirement leaves the practice, another staff member of the practice needs to meet the training requirement.

**In addition to the three mandatory components, GPs need to complete Pre-disposing and Reinforcing Activities (short surveys) to be eligible for 40 RACGP Accredited Activity points.
