We're excited to launch our Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) Training program to assist GPs in our region in learning more about IAR and how it can benefit clinicians and patients.

IAR is an innovative mental health initiative developed by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, being rolled out by Primary Health Networks nationally. IAR is designed to support primary healthcare clinicians in finding the most suitable level of care for patients seeking mental health services within the stepped-care approach.

The main component of IAR is the Decision Support Tool (DST), a clinically informed online tool that supports decision-making at the first point of contact with a patient. GPs can use this tool, along with our Mental Health Help website, to match local services to the identified level of need for an individual patient.

Over the last few years, our region has experienced multiple natural disasters on top of COVID-19. We know that many of our residents are still struggling with the effects of these events and need additional support. Using the IAR-DST can help ensure that patients access the right level of care at the right time. This means we are not over-servicing patients, which can put a strain on the local mental health system, and not under-servicing patients, which can lead to poor health outcomes.

What does IAR Training involve?

IAR Training consists of two online workshops and a total time commitment of two hours. A one-off payment of $300 (GST exclusive) is available for GPs who complete the training. RACGP CPD hours and ACRRM CPD hours also apply.

Workshop 1 is a 30-minute pre-recorded webinar that participants complete in their own time through Your Practice Portal. Participants must complete Workshop 1 before attending Workshop 2.

Workshop 2 is a 90-minute live interactive webinar where GPs can engage in discussion and activities with the group and our Training and Support Officer. There will be multiple dates and times available for Workshop 2.
