Psychiatry Assessment in Children with ADHD Transitioning to Adulthood
We are seeking expressions of interest from psychiatrists to support a specific local need expressed by our GPs to improve access for their adolescent patients, already diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to make a successful transition to adult mental health care, including co-management. An assessment by a psychiatrist during this transition period is integral to the process.
Our GPs in the Nepean Blue Mountains region, which includes the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Penrith, and Lithgow local government areas, have identified delays with the assessment process relating to both wait time and costs incurred by the patients that are creating significant barriers to access, particularly for underserved populations. These factors impact the ongoing care of these patients within the primary care setting.
Our role is to connect mental health services within our region to better support patients in receiving the right care when and where they need it. In this instance, we are seeking your support in responding to this community need through an accelerated pathway of care/access for this specific identified group of patients. This would include us subsidising the consultation fees of up to $1,000.00 per patient over a 12-month period to reduce the cost barrier. Administration through the NBMPHN from the GP to the Psychiatrist would also ensure appropriate referrals.
